With many (many, many) games taking the safer route to development – sequels, HD remakes, re-used ideas – it’s always great to see a team standing up to try something different. Over on our sister site, XBLA Fans, we’re given a bit of a look into a game that’s sure to make some brains ache. Lives and Death is a film noir-esque experience coming from Frima Games, who were recently at the Games Developer Conference in San Fransisco. Speaking with XBLAF, we were given some information as to what the game is about and how it aims to give gamers something completely different.
Teaming with Marv Wolfman – famed writer of the Crisis on Infinite Earths and Blade series of comic books – Lives and Death puts players in the (multi)perspective of Phillip Bester, a private investigator who is watching reality tear at the seams. Initially thinking he’s going crazy, Bester somehow witnesses his own death, which then leads him into seeing various dimensions of the same point in space. Watching the trailer above we get to see two realities in play at the same time – but in the XBLAF preview we’re told that up to sixteen perspectives can be seen at some points. In each reality we’ll notice a difference in detailistic nuances, such as a placed cupboard in one space where in the alternate there is none. And the differences aren’t necessarily exclusive to objects either – they could be in the personalities of characters you’ll meet.
Obviously a game as ambitious as this still needs more time to develop; the preview mentions that much could still change in the visual design or even gameplay elements – the build shown was just a prototype. In that regard we don’t know of a date or “release window” to look forward to, but we do know it’s coming to XBLA, PSN and Steam, and we’ll keep you in the loop about any developments regarding Lives and Death.
